on Sunday afternoons, and invited families who are being housed by the state in motels nearby. These families live in close quarters, without easy access to safe places for the children to play. These events were a lot of fun, and this year the Eliot Church has invited Grace Church and several other Newton parishes to co-sponsor these cookouts with them. (Over the winter, you may remember that we had a big meeting at Grace after church with members from all the various churches, to begin talking about how we would collaborate between parishes. The first joint event was held on Mother's Day, with several members of Grace's Social Action Committee helping out.)
On Tuesday, Nancy Sharby and I attended the first planning meeting for the Cookouts. We have set the dates, and are beginning to get organized. They will be held at the Eliot Church, with Grace's Large Hall as the venue in case of rain. You are invited to help out by setting up, cleaning up, requesting food donations from stores (most of the food is donated) or picking it up, serving, or planning games for the children. Our goal is to create a community where those of us from the different parishes, along with families in transitional housing, can come together five times and connect and enjoy the summertime over a burger. This is a great event for families with children to help with. Spanish speakers are especially encouraged to attend!
Sign up information will follow in the next week or two. But for now, consider your involvement, and mark your calendar with these dates: June 26, July 10, July 24, August 7, August 21. Set-up will begin at 11:30, guests arrive at 12:30, and clean-up begins at 2:30. All Cookouts will take place at the Eliot Church unless it rains; then we're in the Large Hall at Grace.
One more note: These Community Cookouts do not take the place of Grace's Thursday evening Summer Barbecues in July and August! Those will be scheduled shortly.
Please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested or have questions. More sign-up info will follow after the next planning meeting in early June.
