Palm Sunday and Holy Week Music

Just a few remarks about the music over the next week: This year, during the procession of the palms, the choir will sing verses of Psalm 118, and the congregation will sing a very simple refrain, “Hosanna in the highest!”  From earliest times, the church has often sung music in procession, and it is very likely that the Hebrews sang certain psalms in procession, as well, so it seems fitting to add music to the outdoor procession on Palm Sunday.  You will also notice that the Passion narrative on Good Friday will be chanted this year in traditional fashion, that is, by three singers, with the choir joining in as the crowd.  Most of the choral music at this time of year is sung without accompaniment, providing a reflective and unadorned choral sound.

Finally, choir members have been working especially diligently over the past few weeks to prepare the anthems and motets for Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and Easter.  Please let them know how much you appreciate their ministries, particularly at this season.
