In Firelight we learned about the Creation story from the book of Genesis. The children learned the story about how God created the world in six days and on the seventh day God rested. We tried to convey that the point of the lesson was not to debate how we feel about the literal interpretation of scripture, but to appreciate the magnificent, intricate world brought into existence by a loving Creator. We then played a game of “Creation Pictionary” where one-by-one they would draw a picture of creation and the other children would guess what it was. In Godly Play, we heard the Parable of the Good Samaritan. In the story, we heard that Jesus told someone that the most important thing is to love God and love your neighbor as yourself and the Parable was Jesus' response to the question of who is your neighbor. After hearing the parable, we spent some time talking about who the neighbors could have been in the story. In the Middle School Class we talked about the many Christian denominations. We discussed why some of these schisms occur. We talked about what we appreciate about our church, and then played thumb wars to decide differences in opinions to show how some very small differences can cause some very large divisions.
