Eldredge Street Parking

You may have noticed some new parking restrictions on Eldredge Street recently.  These restrictions apply to weekday parking around Grace Church.  They appeared at the end of December, to our surprise and some of the neighbors’ surprise too.  There are many questions about these new restrictions, and Vicki Danberg, parishioner and Newton alderman, has been very helpful as we try to figure them out.  Thank you, Vicki!  And thanks to Steve Carter, Grace Church member and neighbor, for bringing these new restrictions to our attention.
The signs on the Grace Church side of Eldredge Street say “No Parking Except Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays.”  On the opposite side, along the park, there seem to be six spaces from the corner of Church Street to about opposite from Grace’s driveway where parking is allowed on weekdays except from 4:30 to 6:30.  The rest of Eldredge Street, though marked “No parking,” is apparently reserved parking for Underwood teachers.  It seems that these restrictions are in place Monday to Friday.  There continues to be parking on Church Street, and on the even numbered (same side as Grace) side of Eldredge between Church Street and Franklin Street at the moment, except from 4:30 to 6:30.  There is 3 hour parking on Church Street between Eldredge Street and Eliot Church.
Because of these new restrictions parking at Grace Church has become problematic during the week.  The spaces in front of the Counseling Center are reserved for Riverside during the week, but of course with the new limits on street parking more clients are squeezing into the driveway.  The two spaces next to the Parish Hall door are always reserved for the Rector and Grace Church Staff, but even those are sometimes taken by Riverside clients. I have been in touch with the Facilities Manager at Riverside and we are working together to sort out the parking issues.  I will keep everyone posted as the situation becomes clearer.
In the meantime, members of Grace Church, during the week please do not park in the spaces reserved for Riverside in front of the Counseling Center, or in the Rector’s or Staff parking spaces by the Large Hall door.  Please do not park along the church in spaces marked no parking.  You may park along the right side of the driveway if there are spaces.  Parking on Church Street and on Eldredge between Church and Franklin Streets (except in spaces marked no parking from 4:30 to 6:30) is possible.  As the signage may change, please make sure you check the signs before you park.
I’ll keep you posted as I know more.  Please let me know of any questions or problems.
